Wilderness Protection Area - South Australia, Australia
Kangaroo Island's largest wilderness area at 416 square kilometres features the Ravine des Casoars, named by French explorer Baudin in 1803 for the now-extinct Kangaroo Island emu he mistook for cassowaries. Archaeological evidence suggests Aboriginal presence from 7,500 years ago. The 54km Flinders Chase Coastal Trek traverses spectacular landscapes including extensive caves with stalagmites and stalactites, sand dunes, and wildflower displays. The 7.4km Ravine des Casoars Hike offers accessible wilderness exploration.
