Greenland National Parks

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2018). Cultural landscape with 4,200 years of human history. Covers almost 4,000 km2. Stretches from 40km inside Greenland Ice Sheet near Kangerlussuaq to islands south of Sisimiut. Contains archaeological sites from Saqqaq, Dorset, Thule Inuit, and colonial periods.

Island nature reserve about 22km south of Nuuk in outer Godthåbsfjord area. Contains very old geological deposits (approximately 3.85 billion years old), possibly oldest sedimentary rocks and evidence of life on Earth.

Consists of a shallow marine bay, a coastal foreland and a valley. Located on Disko Island.

Nature reserve protecting unique flora, fauna and cultural interests of the Maniitsoq area.

Situated next to western edge of Greenland ice sheet. Diverse topography with extensive grass steppes, swamp, marshland, numerous lakes. Very important staging and moulting area for Greenland white-fronted goose.

High Arctic East Greenland site. Protects internationally important populations of moulting pink-footed geese and barnacle geese. Extensive tundra area with several rivers and numerous shallow lakes.

Located within Northeast Greenland National Park. Important moulting area for pink-footed goose. Extensive lowland area with dwarf scrub heaths, grassland, marshes, and numerous ponds.

Protected since 2000. Features unique ikaite mineral columns (not limestone) - rare formations found nowhere else. At least 938 individual columns up to 20m in height. Protected by Greenland authorities and UNEP.

Typical landscape of southwestern coast. Shallow fjord and archipelago with extensive coastlines and tidal mudflats. Contains Greenland's densest population of white-tailed eagle.

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2004). Protected under Greenland Home Rule Government Order No. 10 of 15 June 2007. Sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of fastest and most active glaciers in world. Outstanding example of glacial ice-stream calving.

Crucial habitat for reindeer and other Arctic species. Part of UNESCO protected area. Known for abundant wildlife including musk oxen, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and snow hares.

Northernmost Ramsar Site in the world. Located within Northeast Greenland National Park. Most important breeding and moulting area in Greenland for light-bellied brent goose. Characterized as coastal polar desert.

Group of low islands with rocky shorelines and surrounding waters. One of the most important breeding and staging sites in Greenland for Arctic terns, king eiders and Atlantic puffins.

Rocky archipelago 10km off mainland coast. Very important breeding area for birds. Contains southernmost breeding colony of thick-billed murre in Greenland and largest breeding numbers of common guillemot.

Situated on the island of Qeqertarsuaq, west of Greenland. Consists of a broad valley with channels of a braided river.

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2017). Subarctic farming landscape bearing witness to Norse farmer-hunters (from 10th century) and Inuit farming communities (from 18th century). Includes five different spots where Vikings established farms in 10th-14th centuries.

Northeast Greenland National Park is the world's largest national park and the northernmost national park on Earth. It protects a vast wilderness of ice sheets, fjords, and tundra that is home to diverse Arctic wildlife including musk oxen, polar bears, walruses, and numerous bird species. The park covers nearly half of Greenland's total land area and includes large sections of the Greenland ice sheet.

Comprises three wide valleys with extensive freshwater wetlands. 12th Ramsar site designated in Greenland.

Nature reserve protecting Greenland's largest birch forest.

Consists of the outer parts of two broad glacial valleys with braided rivers. Contains the most important moulting area in Greenland for the king eider.
