The smallest of North Carolina's four national forests, Uwharrie covers 50,645 acres atop some of the oldest mountains in North America. The Uwharrie Mountains are ancient volcanic remnants from 550 million years ago, once possibly reaching 20,000 feet but now worn down to gentle ridges.
