Wilderness Area - Nova Scotia, Canada
Eigg Mountain-James River Wilderness Area protects 77.05 km² in the Pictou-Antigonish Hills, about 10 km northwest of the town of Antigonish. The protected wilderness encompasses the largest remaining patch of older, contiguous forest in this part of Nova Scotia, featuring rolling uplands carved by steep ravines with diverse forest types including hardwoods, mixed canyons, and wetlands. The region supports notable wildlife including northern goshawks and endangered mainland moose, while Atlantic salmon spawn in several river headwaters. The James River Watershed—which supplies Antigonish's drinking water—overlaps significantly with the wilderness designation, strengthening water protection efforts. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backcountry skiing, bird watching, hunting, and trapping. The area was originally designated in 2005 and expanded in 2007, 2015, and again in 2022 to enhance ecological protection and connectivity.
