Wilderness Area - Nova Scotia, Canada
Clattenburgh Brook Wilderness Area protects 1,911 hectares within the Central Quartzite Hills and Plains natural landscape in inland Halifax County. The area is characterized by Meguma Group bedrock forming large-scale folds creating distinctive parallel ridge and swale topography with quartzite ridges alternating with slate-based valleys. Diverse vegetation transitions parallel bedrock changes, ranging from dry barrens with bare rock, woody shrubs, and lichens to well-drained forests of black spruce, balsam fir, and white pine on ridges. Stunted black spruce, larch, white pine, and red maple inhabit semi-barrens, while boggy swales support sphagnum mosses, shrubs, and black spruce-larch communities with fen vegetation flanking watercourses. An extensive bog complex straddles the northern section boundary. This unique geology and ecology make it a spectacular landscape visible in aerial photographs.
