Wilderness Reserve - Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
A vast landscape of ponds, rivers, barrens, bogs and fens, forests, and thickets, the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve is one of the last major unspoiled areas remaining on the island of Newfoundland. The essentially untouched upland plateau sits at approximately 300 meters elevation, characterized by extensive barrens, kalmia heaths, bogs and fens. The reserve contains the largest protected river system in the province and is the winter calving ground for the province's largest caribou herd (Middle Ridge herd, approximately 15,000 animals) and contains the largest Canada goose habitat on the island. Wildlife includes moose, caribou, lynx, fox, snowshoe hare, beaver, muskrat, otter, mink, and various birds.
