National Park - South Australia, Australia
Australia's second largest lake when filled, this 5,745 square kilometre salt flat lies between the Arcoona Plateau and Flinders Ranges, 345km north of Adelaide. Usually dry, the lake has filled with water only once in the past 150 years, when it supported up to 100,000 breeding banded stilts. The stark wilderness landscape offers excellent photography and geology study opportunities. Sacred to the Kokatha, Adnyamathanha/Kuyani, and Barngarla peoples, the lake was originally called Ngarndamukia, meaning 'shower of rain'.
