Spring Meadow Lake

Spring Meadow Lake State Park encompasses 30 acres around a 16-acre spring-fed lake within the city limits of Helena in Lewis and Clark County. The park provides an urban swimming and recreation destination for Montana's capital city.

The spring-fed lake supports rainbow trout. Waterfowl including ducks and geese frequent the park year-round. Various songbirds inhabit the shoreline vegetation. White-tailed deer occasionally visit.

Cottonwoods and planted trees shade the park. Cattails and rushes fringe portions of the lake. Native grasses and landscaped areas provide varied ground cover in this urban park setting.

The spring-fed lake occupies a former gravel pit that filled with groundwater. The crystal-clear water is fed by springs emerging from the Helena Valley aquifer. The consistent spring flow maintains water clarity and relatively constant temperatures.

Helena experiences cold winters and warm, dry summers. Annual precipitation averages about 12 inches. The spring-fed lake maintains relatively stable temperatures, warmer than mountain lakes in summer.

Helena was founded during the 1864 gold rush at Last Chance Gulch. The city became the territorial capital in 1875 and the state capital when Montana achieved statehood in 1889.

Spring Meadow Lake State Park was developed around the former gravel pit to provide urban recreation. The park is one of Montana's most visited due to its location within the capital city.

Swimming in the clear spring-fed lake is the primary summer activity. A trail loops around the lake for walking and jogging. Fishing and wildlife viewing provide additional recreation. Ice skating is possible in winter.
