About Smith River

Smith River State Park encompasses multiple access points along 59 miles of the Smith River in Meagher and Cascade counties. The river flows through a spectacular limestone canyon, and the float trip through the canyon is one of Montana's most popular and coveted wilderness river experiences.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The canyon supports elk, mule deer, black bears, and mountain lions. The river provides excellent brown trout and rainbow trout habitat. Bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons fish the river. Bighorn sheep inhabit some canyon cliff areas.

Flora Ecosystems

Douglas fir forests cover the canyon slopes. Cottonwoods and willows line the riverbank. The canyon's varied aspects support diverse plant communities. Wildflowers bloom on meadow benches above the river.

Geology

The Smith River carved a deep canyon through Mississippian-age Madison Limestone. The canyon walls rise hundreds of feet above the river, displaying layers of ancient marine sediment. Caves and natural arches formed in the limestone add geological interest.

Climate And Weather

The canyon creates its own microclimate, cooler and more sheltered than surrounding areas. Central Montana experiences cold winters and warm summers. The float season typically runs from late May through early July depending on water levels.

Human History

The Smith River canyon has been utilized by various peoples for thousands of years. The river was named for fur trader Thomas Fox Smith. The canyon's remote character has preserved its wild nature.

Park History

Smith River State Park was established to manage the increasingly popular float trip through the limestone canyon. A limited permit system was implemented to protect the river's wild character and visitor experience.

Major Trails And Attractions

The 59-mile float trip through the canyon is the primary attraction, requiring 4-5 days. Fishing for trout is excellent throughout. Camping at designated sites along the river provides a wilderness experience. Permits are required and awarded by lottery.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Camp Kitchen launch site and Eden Bridge takeout bracket the float. Designated camping sites with fire grates and pit toilets are spaced along the river. Permits are obtained through a lottery system each year.

Conservation And Sustainability

The permit system limits use to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and the wilderness character. Leave-no-trace principles are enforced. The Smith River is one of Montana's most carefully managed recreation resources.
