About Smith River

Smith River State Park encompasses multiple access points along 59 miles of the Smith River in Meagher and Cascade counties. The river flows through a spectacular limestone canyon, and the float trip through the canyon is one of Montana's most popular and coveted wilderness river experiences.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The canyon supports elk, mule deer, black bears, and mountain lions. The river provides excellent brown trout and rainbow trout habitat. Bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons fish the river. Bighorn sheep inhabit some canyon cliff areas.

Flora Ecosystems

Douglas fir forests cover the canyon slopes. Cottonwoods and willows line the riverbank. The canyon's varied aspects support diverse plant communities. Wildflowers bloom on meadow benches above the river.

Geology
