About Black Sandy

Black Sandy State Park encompasses 52 acres on the shore of Hauser Lake on the Missouri River near Helena in Lewis and Clark County. The park provides water recreation and camping within easy reach of Montana's capital city.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Hauser Lake supports rainbow trout, brown trout, walleye, and perch. White-tailed deer and mule deer frequent the area. Ospreys and bald eagles fish the reservoir, and various waterfowl utilize the lake.

Flora Ecosystems

Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir grow on the hillsides above the lake. The rocky shoreline supports sparse vegetation adapted to fluctuating water levels. Native grasses and wildflowers grow in open areas.

Geology

Hauser Lake was created by Hauser Dam on the Missouri River, one of a series of dams in the Missouri River canyon below Helena. The canyon exposes Precambrian metamorphic rocks and younger volcanic formations.

Climate And Weather

The Helena area experiences cold, dry winters and warm summers. Annual precipitation averages about 12 inches. The lake-canyon setting provides some wind protection but can funnel valley breezes.

Human History

The Missouri River canyon has been used as a travel corridor for thousands of years. The Gates of the Mountains, nearby upstream, was named by Meriwether Lewis in 1805. Hauser Dam was built in 1907.

Park History

Black Sandy State Park was developed to provide Helena-area residents with convenient access to Hauser Lake recreation. The park is one of the most popular day-use areas near the capital.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming, boating, and fishing are the primary activities. A sand beach provides swimming access. The park is popular for water skiing and personal watercraft use on warm summer days.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers 30 campsites, a boat ramp, a swimming beach, and day-use facilities. It is located about 7 miles north of Helena off Interstate 15.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park helps manage recreational pressure on Hauser Lake. Water quality monitoring and shoreline management protect the reservoir ecosystem.
