Rrushkull

Rrushkull Protected Landscape protects coastal habitats in Durrës County, central Albania, safeguarding a section of the Adriatic coastline including dune systems and associated vegetation near Albania's most populated coastal zone. The protected area represents an increasingly rare remnant of natural coastal landscape amidst the heavily developed Durrës-Tirana corridor.

The coastal habitats support specialized dune invertebrate communities and reptiles including sand lizards. Migratory birds use the coastal zone during passage. Marine species including occasional sea turtles are found in adjacent waters. Coastal scrub supports small bird communities.

Sand dune vegetation includes specialized grasses and salt-tolerant shrubs adapted to the harsh coastal environment. Behind the active dunes, stabilized areas support Mediterranean scrub and remnant coastal forest. The dune plant communities are increasingly rare on Albania's developed coast.

The dune system is formed by wind-deposited sand derived from Adriatic coastal sediment transport. The coastal morphology reflects the interaction between wave energy, sediment supply, and wind processes.

The coastal Mediterranean climate brings hot dry summers and mild wet winters. Sea breezes moderate summer temperatures. The exposed coastal position means wind action is significant for dune processes.

The coastline near Durrës has been utilized since antiquity, with the nearby city being one of the oldest in Albania. Recent decades have seen massive coastal development transforming most of the natural shoreline.

The protected landscape designation attempts to preserve remaining natural coastal habitats against the intense development pressure in the Durrës region.

Beach access and coastal walking through dune landscapes provide recreational opportunities in a natural setting close to major population centers.

The site is near Durrës, Albania's second-largest city, approximately 30 minutes from Tirana. Accessibility is excellent but development pressure is severe.

Coastal development for tourism and housing represents an existential threat to the remaining natural dune habitat. Sand extraction, construction waste, and recreational overuse degrade the protected landscape.
