About Bjeshka e Oroshit
Bjeshka e Oroshit Protected Landscape protects highland mountain pastures and forests in Lezhë County, northern Albania. The protected landscape encompasses the traditional highland grazing areas above the Mirditë region, combining natural mountain ecosystems with the cultural landscape of transhumant pastoralism that has shaped these mountains for centuries.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The mountain terrain supports bears, wolves, and wild boar in forested areas. Raptors including golden eagles hunt over the open highland meadows. The combination of forest and open habitats supports diverse bird communities. Mountain streams harbor native aquatic species.
Flora Ecosystems
Mountain meadows and forest create a mosaic landscape. Beech forests dominate the woodland areas, with alpine grasslands on exposed higher ground. The traditional grazing regime maintains species-rich meadows that would otherwise succeed to forest.
Geology
The highland terrain consists of limestone and other mountain rocks typical of northern Albania's geological structure. Karst features occur in the limestone areas.
Climate And Weather
The mountain climate brings cold winters with significant snowfall and cool summers. The highland position receives adequate precipitation for forest and meadow growth.
Human History
The bjeshkë (highland pastures) have been central to the pastoral economy of Mirditë communities for centuries, with the transhumance tradition driving livestock to these summer grazing areas. The Oroshi area was historically important as a center of the Mirdita chieftainship.
Park History
The protected landscape designation recognizes both the natural values of the mountain ecosystems and the cultural significance of the traditional pastoral landscape. Protection aims to support continued sustainable pastoralism.
Major Trails And Attractions
Highland walking through mountain meadows and forests provides access to scenic mountain landscapes. The cultural heritage of pastoral traditions adds interest. Views over northern Albania reward summit hikes.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Access is from the Mirditë area in Lezhë County, with mountain roads reaching highland villages. No dedicated facilities exist. Basic guesthouses operate in surrounding villages.
Conservation And Sustainability
Abandonment of traditional grazing threatens meadow diversity as forest encroaches. Conversely, overgrazing in remaining active areas can degrade habitat quality. Supporting sustainable pastoralism maintains both cultural and natural heritage.
