Pishë Poro-Nartë

Pishë Poro-Nartë Protected Landscape encompasses a coastal area in Vlorë County, southern Albania, protecting a mosaic of coastal pine forest, lagoons, wetlands, and shoreline habitats between the city of Vlorë and the Narta Lagoon. The area combines Mediterranean pine woodland with important coastal wetland habitats supporting diverse birdlife.

The Narta Lagoon supports significant populations of greater flamingos, pelicans, and diverse wading birds. The pine forest provides habitat for Mediterranean bird species and small mammals. Marine turtles nest on beach sections. The lagoon fish populations support both avian predators and local fisheries.

Aleppo pine forest creates shaded woodland areas between the coastal settlements and the lagoon. The lagoon margins support saltmarsh vegetation and reedbeds. Coastal sand dunes retain specialized dune plant communities. The pine forest understory includes Mediterranean maquis species.

The area occupies a low-lying coastal plain with the Narta Lagoon formed behind a sand barrier. The pine forest grows on stabilized sandy substrate. The lagoon receives freshwater input from drainage channels while maintaining marine connection.

The Mediterranean climate brings hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The coastal position and flat terrain expose the area to sea breezes and winter storms. Summer drought stress affects vegetation on sandy soils.

The protected landscape designation aims to safeguard remaining natural coastal habitats from the urban and tourism development pressure radiating from Vlorë. The flamingo presence has become a conservation symbol for the area.

The area is immediately adjacent to Vlorë city, approximately 2 to 3 hours from Tirana. The proximity to Vlorë provides full tourism infrastructure access. The pine forest area is accessible by walking and cycling from the city.

Urban expansion from Vlorë represents the primary threat, with construction encroaching on forest and wetland areas. Pollution from the city affects lagoon water quality. Tourism pressure on beaches disturbs nesting turtles. Maintaining the pine forest against development pressure requires strong planning controls.
