Guri i Nikës-Lenie-Valamarë

Guri i Nikës-Lenie-Valamarë Protected Landscape protects an extensive mountain area in Korçë County, eastern Albania, encompassing the Valamarë mountain range and surrounding highlands. The protected landscape covers diverse mountain terrain including alpine peaks, subalpine meadows, and extensive forests that together represent one of the larger protected areas in eastern Albania. The Valamarë peak reaches approximately 2,370 meters, providing dramatic mountain scenery and diverse altitudinal habitats.

The extensive mountain area supports populations of brown bears, wolves, and chamois in its remote terrain. Wild boar and roe deer inhabit the forests. Golden eagles nest on cliff faces, and the diverse mountain habitats support varied raptor communities. Forest birds include capercaillie in mature conifer stands. Mountain streams harbor native trout. The reserve's size provides the territory needed by wide-ranging carnivores.

The altitudinal range supports a full sequence from mixed oak woodland at lower elevations through beech and fir forests to alpine meadows above the treeline. Bosnian pine may occur at the highest forest limits. Alpine flora includes endemic Balkan species on limestone outcrops. The extensive meadows above treeline support diverse wildflower communities during the brief summer season.

The mountain range consists of limestone and other sedimentary formations characteristic of the Albanian-Greek border highlands. Karst development creates caves and underground drainage in the limestone areas. Glacial features mark the highest elevations. The geological complexity supports habitat diversity.

The high mountain climate brings severe winters with heavy snowfall and cool short summers. Precipitation is significant, exceeding 1,500 millimeters annually at higher elevations. The eastern position creates continental temperature extremes.

Traditional pastoral communities utilized the mountain meadows for summer grazing while residing in valley villages during winter. The mountainous border terrain limited development throughout history.

The protected landscape designation encompasses a large mountain area providing landscape-scale protection for mountain ecosystems and their wildlife. The area's connectivity with Greek protected areas across the border enhances its conservation value.

Mountain hiking to alpine peaks and meadows provides the main visitor experience. The Valamarë summit offers panoramic views. The remote character provides genuine wilderness experiences.

Access is from the Korçë area in eastern Albania, with rough mountain roads reaching surrounding villages. No facilities exist within the protected landscape. Accommodation is available in Korçë.

Overgrazing, illegal logging, and hunting pressure threaten biodiversity. The area's importance for large carnivore populations requires maintaining habitat connectivity and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
