Cangonj

Cangonj Managed Nature Reserve protects wetland habitats in Elbasan County, central Albania, safeguarding a freshwater marsh and lake system that provides important habitat for waterbirds and aquatic biodiversity. The reserve represents a significant natural area in the otherwise intensively used landscape of central Albania.

The wetland supports populations of herons, egrets, coots, and various duck species. Migratory waterbirds use the site during passage and wintering periods. The aquatic environment supports fish, amphibian, and reptile communities. Otters may utilize the waterways. Reed-nesting birds breed in the marsh vegetation.

Reedbed vegetation dominates the marsh areas providing cover and nesting habitat. Aquatic plants grow in the open water areas. Riparian woodland fringes the wetland edges. The surrounding landscape is largely agricultural with scattered trees.

The wetland occupies a depression in the landscape where impeded drainage creates waterlogged conditions. The underlying geology and flat terrain contribute to water retention forming the marsh system.

The sub-Mediterranean climate brings seasonal variation in water levels, with winter rainfall filling the wetland and summer drought reducing it. The wetland depends on both surface water inputs and groundwater contributions.

The wetland has been used for fishing, reed harvesting, and hunting by local communities. Surrounding land has been developed for agriculture, reducing the original wetland extent.

The managed nature reserve designation protects remaining wetland from further drainage and conversion. The site contributes to Albania's wetland protected area network.

Birdwatching provides the main visitor interest, with waterbird activity best during migration and winter seasons.

The reserve is located in Elbasan County, accessible from the Elbasan area. No visitor facilities exist. Accommodation is available in Elbasan, approximately 1.5 hours from Tirana.

Water abstraction for agriculture threatens wetland levels. Pollution from surrounding farmland degrades water quality. Maintaining the hydrological regime is essential for the marsh ecosystem.
