About Burtonsville Island

Burtonsville Island Natural Area comprises a group of islands surrounded by a fork in the North Saskatchewan River. It features old-growth balsam poplar and white spruce forest with a tall, dense shrub layer, plus mixed stands of poplar, spruce and trembling aspen with trees of varying height, density and understory composition. Small mammals include red squirrels, muskrats, porcupines, skunks, mink, weasels, and beavers. The islands provide important winter range for moose, white-tailed deer, elk, and black bears.
