Lake Dennison

Lake Dennison Recreation Area encompasses 4,000 acres surrounding the scenic Dennison Lake in Winchendon, Massachusetts, offering camping, swimming, and fishing in the remote north-central highlands near the New Hampshire border.

The large forest block supports moose, black bear, fisher, and numerous woodland species. The lake attracts loons, ospreys, and various waterfowl. Beaver activity has created wetlands throughout the property.

Northern hardwood forests of sugar maple, beech, and yellow birch predominate. The lake shoreline supports diverse wetland vegetation. Mountain laurel blooms profusely in June.

Dennison Lake occupies a basin created by glacial damming. The surrounding terrain consists of metamorphic bedrock mantled by glacial deposits.

The elevated highland location produces cool summers averaging 78°F and cold winters with substantial snowfall. The northern character supports species typical of New Hampshire.

Indigenous peoples utilized these highlands. The Dennison family farmed portions of the land. The recreation area developed to serve regional outdoor recreation needs.

The state developed the recreation area in conjunction with adjacent Otter River State Forest, creating one of the largest publicly accessible areas in central Massachusetts.

The campground provides excellent overnight facilities. The swimming beach offers refreshing lake swimming. Trails connect to adjacent state forest lands. Winter activities include ice fishing and snowmobiling.

The campground offers 150 sites suitable for tents and RVs. Beach facilities include restrooms and seasonal concessions. The area is accessible from Route 202, approximately 70 miles northwest of Boston.

Management maintains forest health and water quality. The large forest block provides critical wildlife habitat. Sustainable forestry practices balance recreation with resource protection.
