About Leominster

Leominster State Forest encompasses 4,300 acres of rolling woodland in the north-central Massachusetts towns of Leominster, Princeton, Sterling, and Westminster, featuring Crow Hills pond and extensive trail networks.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The large forest block supports white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, coyotes, and fishers. Crow Hills pond attracts various waterfowl. Breeding birds include numerous forest songbirds.

Flora Ecosystems

Mixed oak-pine forest typical of central Massachusetts predominates. Mountain laurel creates spectacular June displays. Wetlands support diverse aquatic vegetation.

Geology

The forest occupies metamorphic terrain with dramatic rocky outcrops at Crow Hills. Glacial erratics are scattered throughout. The rolling topography reflects glacial modification.

The elevated central Massachusetts location produces warm summers and cold winters with moderate snowfall.

Indigenous peoples utilized these forests. Colonial settlement brought farming to accessible areas. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed facilities during the 1930s.
