About North Zamari

North Zamari Wildlife Sanctuary protects a tract of tropical upland forest in the Bago Yoma (Pegu Range) of northern Bago Region, in one of Myanmar centre of remaining Asian elephant habitat. Designated in 2014 and managed by the Forest Department Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division, the sanctuary was created to safeguard wild Asian elephants and other large mammals, including endangered gaur and banteng, after decades of teak logging degraded the surrounding forests. It forms part of the Bago Yoma conservation landscape where a long-term logging ban and forest restoration are underway.
