About Pohrebeni
Pohrebeni is a Landscape Reserve in Moldova's Orhei District, protecting natural vegetation in the scenic hilly landscape of central Moldova between the central Codri zone and the Dniester valley. The reserve preserves deciduous forest and associated habitats in terrain that has maintained natural character due to its relatively steep topography. The Orhei District contains several landscape features of national importance, and the Pohrebeni reserve contributes to maintaining the natural heritage of this ecologically and culturally significant region.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The forest supports typical Moldovan woodland fauna including wild boar, roe deer, foxes, and diverse smaller mammals. The bird community reflects the deciduous forest habitat with woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various warblers. Forest edges and clearings provide additional habitat diversity supporting raptor species and edge-dwelling birds.
Flora Ecosystems
Deciduous forest with oak and hornbeam dominates, accompanied by the typical Codri-zone associate species including linden, maple, and wild fruit trees. The shrub layer and ground flora support diverse woodland plant communities with spring-flowering geophytes and shade-tolerant herbs.
Geology
The reserve occupies dissected terrain in the central Moldovan hills where stream erosion has created slopes too steep for easy cultivation, preserving forest cover. The geological substrate consists of Neogene sediments with loess cover, typical of the region.
Climate And Weather
Central Moldova's moderate continental climate with approximately 500-550mm annual precipitation supports healthy deciduous forest growth. The hilly terrain creates varied microclimates.
Human History
The Orhei area has been settled since ancient times, with the famous Orheiul Vechi archaeological complex nearby representing continuous habitation spanning thousands of years. The surrounding landscape was progressively cleared for agriculture while steeper terrain retained forest cover.
Park History
Pohrebeni was designated as a Landscape Reserve to protect the natural character of this section of the central Moldovan hills. The reserve contributes to maintaining ecological connectivity between the Codri zone and the Dniester valley.
