About Suta de Movile
Suta de Movile (Hundred Hills) is a Landscape Reserve in Moldova's Riscani District, protecting a distinctive geological landscape of rounded loess hills in the northern part of the country that creates terrain reminiscent of a miniature hill country within the generally flat Moldovan landscape. The reserve's name refers to the numerous closely-spaced mounds and hills that characterize this unusual geomorphological formation, which preserves steppe and forest-steppe vegetation on its varied slopes and summits. This landscape feature represents a rare Moldovan example of loess terrain maintaining its original hilly character without being leveled for agriculture.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The undulating terrain with its varied habitats supports diverse fauna combining open-country and woodland species. European ground squirrels inhabit the grassy slopes, hares and foxes utilize the varied terrain, and the bird community includes steppe species such as larks and pipits alongside woodland birds in any forested sections. The diverse invertebrate community reflects the variety of habitats from dry hilltops to moist hollows.
Flora Ecosystems
The vegetation reflects the topographic diversity, with steppe grassland on exposed summits and dry slopes featuring feather grasses and diverse steppe herbs, transitioning to more mesic vegetation in the sheltered hollows between hills. The diversity of aspect within this compact area creates conditions for both warmth-loving and shade-tolerant species to coexist. The steppe communities are particularly valuable as representatives of the original Pannonian-influenced grassland that once covered large areas of northern Moldova.
Geology
The Hundred Hills represent an unusual preservation of loess relief, where the typical wind-deposited dust of the Quaternary period has been eroded into numerous closely-spaced rounded hills rather than forming the smooth plateau surface more typical of Moldovan loess landscapes. The formation may result from the interaction of wind deposition with underlying topography or differential erosion along joint patterns in the loess. The loess deposits reveal the Pleistocene climate history of northern Moldova.
Climate And Weather
Northern Moldova's continental climate with approximately 550mm annual precipitation characterizes the area, with the varied terrain creating local microclimatic differences between exposed hilltops and sheltered hollows. The dry, exposed summits maintain steppe conditions while the moister hollows may support lusher vegetation.
Human History
The unusual terrain made this area less attractive for agricultural leveling than the surrounding smooth loess landscape, contributing to the preservation of its distinctive geomorphology and natural vegetation. The surrounding landscape was converted to farmland during centuries of agricultural development while this terrain remained as rough pasture.
Park History
Suta de Movile was designated as a Landscape Reserve to protect this unusual geological formation and its associated steppe vegetation from potential leveling for agriculture or other disturbance. The geomorphological uniqueness and the rare steppe habitat it supports together justify conservation.
Major Trails And Attractions
The distinctive hilly landscape offers unusual walking terrain for Moldova, with panoramic views from the numerous rounded summits across the surrounding flat agricultural plain. The steppe vegetation displays attractive wildflower blooms in late spring.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Located in the Riscani District of northern Moldova, accessible from local roads. No formal visitor facilities.
Conservation And Sustainability
Preventing agricultural leveling and overgrazing of the steppe vegetation are the primary concerns. The geomorphological value makes any terrain modification irreversible, requiring strict protection of the landform itself alongside its vegetation communities.
