About Tooloom

Tooloom National Park is a subtropical rainforest park in the far north of New South Wales, located in the ranges of the Richmond Valley hinterland west of Woodenbong near the Queensland border. Covering approximately 9,940 hectares, the park protects significant areas of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest on the volcanic ranges of the northern rivers. The park forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area and contributes to the conservation of the rainforest landscapes of the northern rivers.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Tooloom National Park supports subtropical rainforest wildlife. The koala is present in ecotone communities. Diverse rainforest birds including the Wompoo fruit-dove and regent bowerbird are present. The Albert's lyrebird inhabits the dense forest. Ringtail possums and diverse bats occupy the canopy. The park's location near the Queensland border supports some northern species at the southern limit of their range.

Flora Ecosystems

Subtropical rainforest dominates the sheltered valleys and slopes, featuring bangalow palms, hoop pines, and diverse vine forest species. Warm temperate rainforest occurs on cooler aspects. Tall wet sclerophyll forest with flooded gum forms the transition to open forest. The Tooloom Scrub is one of the significant rainforest remnants of the Richmond Valley hinterland.
