About Mount Royal

Mount Royal National Park is a significant escarpment and rainforest park in the Hunter Valley hinterland of New South Wales, located in the ranges between Singleton and Gloucester. Covering approximately 17,260 hectares, the park protects the rugged ranges of the Liverpool and Barrington Ranges, encompassing significant areas of warm temperate and subtropical rainforest, tall wet sclerophyll forest, and dry sclerophyll woodland. The park forms part of the broader Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, contributing to the conservation of the rainforest landscapes of the Hunter Valley hinterland.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Mount Royal National Park supports diverse rainforest and wet forest wildlife. The superb lyrebird is abundant in the wet forest gullies. Yellow-bellied gliders and greater gliders inhabit old-growth eucalypts. Spotted quolls have been recorded. The platypus occurs in permanent streams. The park forms part of the wildlife movement corridor connecting the Barrington Tops ranges with the Hunter Valley. Diverse woodland birds occur at the forest margins, and rainforest-specific birds including the Wompoo fruit-dove inhabit the subtropical sections.

Flora Ecosystems

Warm temperate rainforest with coachwood, sassafras, and lilly pilly fills the sheltered gullies and lower slopes. Subtropical rainforest elements including bangalow palm occur at lower elevations. Tall wet sclerophyll forest with blue gum and tallowwood dominates the mid slopes. Dry sclerophyll woodland with scribbly gum and stringybark covers the exposed ridges. The vegetation transitions reflect the broad elevation range and the orographic rainfall patterns of the escarpment.

Geology

Mount Royal National Park occupies part of the complex geological terrain of the Hunter Valley hinterland, where Permian sedimentary rocks and Triassic sandstones have been folded and faulted to create the rugged ranges. The escarpment terrain has been carved by rivers draining to the Hunter Valley. The moist east-facing slopes support the rainforest communities.

Climate And Weather

The park has a warm temperate to subtropical climate influenced by orographic rainfall on the escarpment. Annual rainfall ranges from 900 to 1,400 millimetres. Summers are warm, typically 22 to 28°C. Winters are cool with occasional frosts on the higher ridges. The escarpment receives higher rainfall than the surrounding plains.

Human History

The Wonnarua and Gringai peoples are the traditional custodians of the Hunter Valley hinterland. The escarpment ranges were important seasonal territories. European timber operations logged the rainforest from the late 19th century.

Park History

Mount Royal National Park was established to protect the rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest of the Hunter Valley escarpment, contributing to the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area.

Major Trails And Attractions

Walking tracks through the rainforest and escarpment forest provide access to the outstanding vegetation communities. Birdwatching for lyrebirds and rainforest species is excellent. The escarpment views over the Hunter Valley are dramatic. The park is less visited than the more accessible national parks.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Mount Royal National Park has limited visitor facilities. Access is via roads from Singleton and Gloucester. Those communities provide visitor services. A national parks pass applies.

Conservation And Sustainability

Protecting the rainforest from invasive weeds, particularly lantana and exotic vines, is the primary management challenge. The park's connection to the Barrington Tops World Heritage Area through wildlife movement corridors is maintained. Fire management protects the rainforest communities on the escarpment.
