About Mallanganee

Mallanganee National Park is a protected area in the northern rivers region of New South Wales, located in the ranges near the town of Casino in the Richmond Valley. Covering approximately 3,760 hectares, the park protects significant areas of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, and the distinctive red basaltic soil communities of the northern rivers ranges. The park contributes to the conservation of the remnant rainforest on the interior ranges of the far north coast, providing habitat connectivity within the broader Gondwana Rainforests landscape.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Mallanganee National Park supports diverse subtropical rainforest fauna. Koalas are present in the ecotone communities. The park provides habitat for several threatened bat species and for the powerful owl in the denser forest sections. Regent bowerbirds and Wompoo fruit-doves inhabit the rainforest. Common ringtail possums and greater gliders roost in the forest canopy. The park's connection to adjacent state forests and other protected areas supports wildlife movement across the northern rivers landscape.

Flora Ecosystems

Subtropical rainforest dominates the sheltered gullies and slopes, featuring hoop pine, corkwood, and various fig species. Warm temperate rainforest with coachwood occurs on the higher, cooler aspects. Tall wet sclerophyll forest with flooded gum and tallowwood forms the broad transition zone between rainforest and open forest. The rich red basaltic soils of the northern rivers ranges support the most productive forest communities, with towering trees and dense understorey vegetation.

Geology

Mallanganee National Park is underlain by basaltic rocks associated with the Cenozoic volcanism of the northern rivers region, including the ancient shield volcano of the Tweed area. The basaltic rocks weather to produce the characteristic deep, red-brown soils that support the luxuriant subtropical rainforest. Stream incision has created the valley topography of the park's terrain. The geology is part of the broader volcanic landscape of the northern rivers that extends from the Tweed to the New England Tableland.

Climate And Weather

The park has a warm subtropical climate with high rainfall concentrated in summer. Annual rainfall is approximately 1,400 to 1,800 millimetres. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures reaching 30 to 35°C. Winters are mild, with overnight temperatures around 10 to 15°C. The high rainfall and warm temperatures support the lush subtropical rainforest.

Human History

The Bundjalung people are the traditional custodians of the northern rivers region, with the rainforest ranges providing food, medicine, and materials. European timber cutters cleared much of the original rainforest from the northern rivers in the 19th and 20th centuries. The park protects remnant rainforest that survived the clearing era.

Park History

Mallanganee National Park was established as part of the conservation reserve network on the northern rivers, protecting remnant rainforest in the Richmond Valley hinterland. Management focuses on lantana control and feral pig management as the primary threats to the rainforest communities.

Major Trails And Attractions

The park offers exploration opportunities through the subtropical rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest. Birdwatching is productive. The park is less visited than the better-known northern rivers parks and appeals to those seeking a quieter rainforest experience.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Mallanganee National Park has basic visitor facilities. Access is via roads from Casino. Casino provides visitor services approximately 20 kilometres away. A national parks pass applies.

Conservation And Sustainability

Lantana control is the primary management activity. Feral pig management protects the rainforest floor. The park's contribution to the rainforest conservation network of the northern rivers is significant, and connectivity with adjacent natural areas is maintained.
