About Dardhë-Xhyrë
Dardhë-Xhyrë Managed Nature Reserve protects mountain landscapes and forests in Korçë County, eastern Albania. The reserve encompasses forested mountains and alpine meadows that provide habitat for diverse wildlife in the highland area east of the Korçë basin. The name derives from local villages whose traditional territories included the protected mountain areas.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The reserve supports brown bears, wolves, and chamois in the mountain terrain. Wild boar and roe deer inhabit the forests. Golden eagles patrol the rocky heights. The forest avifauna includes woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various warblers. Mountain streams support native trout populations.
Flora Ecosystems
Beech and fir forests dominate the mountain slopes, with alpine meadows above the treeline. The forest includes trees of significant age in less accessible areas. Mountain grasslands support diverse wildflower communities during the short summer growing season. Endemic Balkan plants occur on rocky limestone outcrops.
Geology
The reserve occupies mountainous terrain on limestone and crystalline rocks. Karst features occur in the limestone areas. The varied geology supports diverse habitats and soil types across relatively short distances.
Climate And Weather
The continental mountain climate brings severe winters with heavy snowfall and cool summers. Precipitation exceeds 1,200 millimeters annually. The eastern position in Albania creates more continental conditions with greater temperature extremes than western regions.
Human History
The mountains have been used for summer grazing by communities from surrounding villages for centuries. Traditional pastoral activities shaped the forest-meadow boundaries. Selective timber extraction occurred in more accessible forest areas.
Park History
The managed nature reserve designation protects the mountain ecosystems while allowing continued traditional pastoral activities at sustainable levels. The reserve contributes to the protected area network in eastern Albania.
Major Trails And Attractions
Mountain hiking through forests and alpine meadows provides the primary visitor experience. Summit viewpoints offer panoramic views over the Korçë basin and surrounding peaks. Wildlife observation for large mammals is possible in quiet conditions.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The reserve is located in the mountains of Korçë County, accessed from the Korçë-Pogradec area. No facilities exist within the reserve. Accommodation is available in Korçë city.
Conservation And Sustainability
Overgrazing by livestock threatens alpine meadow quality. Illegal logging reduces forest cover. Maintaining habitat for large mammals requires minimizing human disturbance and maintaining forest connectivity with surrounding mountain areas.
