About Clear Lake

Clear Lake State Park is located in Montmorency County in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the shores of the aptly named Clear Lake. The park offers camping, swimming, and fishing in one of Michigan's clearest inland lakes, surrounded by the forests of northern Michigan's lake country.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The clear waters of the lake support bass, pike, and panfish. Loons are a highlight, with their haunting calls echoing across the lake. Bald eagles and osprey fish from above. The surrounding forest supports white-tailed deer, black bears, ruffed grouse, and wild turkeys. Migratory warblers are abundant in spring.

Flora Ecosystems

Northern hardwood forest dominated by sugar maple, American beech, and yellow birch surrounds the lake. Jack pine and red pine grow on sandier soils. The lake's clear water supports submerged aquatic vegetation visible from the surface. The forest understory includes ferns, wildflowers, and various shrubs.

Geology

Clear Lake is a glacial lake with exceptionally clear water due to its sandy bottom and limited nutrient input. The lake sits in glacial outwash deposits. The clarity allows visitors to see the lake bottom in many areas.

Climate And Weather

Northern Michigan has cold, snowy winters and pleasant summers. Summer temperatures reach the mid-70s. The area receives significant snowfall, making it popular for winter sports.

Human History

The region was home to Ojibwe peoples. The northern Lower Peninsula was heavily logged in the late 19th century. The town of Atlanta developed as a northern Michigan community.

Park History

Clear Lake State Park was established to preserve public access to this remarkably clear lake and provide camping and recreation in northern Michigan.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming in the crystal-clear lake is the primary attraction. Fishing, boating, and canoeing are popular. Nature trails explore the surrounding forest. The park is a gateway to Elk Country, where Michigan's elk herd can be observed.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is near Atlanta on Highway 33. It offers modern campsites, a swimming beach, and boat launch. Atlanta provides basic services.

Conservation And Sustainability

Protecting the lake's exceptional water clarity is the primary management goal. Restrictions on motorized watercraft help maintain water quality. Invasive species monitoring and prevention are critical.
