About Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes State Park is located in Iron County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offering a quiet retreat on the shores of two connected glacial lakes. The park provides camping, swimming, and fishing in the boreal forests of the western Upper Peninsula, a region known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The lakes support northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, and panfish. Loons call across the lakes at dawn and dusk. Bald eagles, osprey, and great blue herons fish the waters. White-tailed deer, black bears, and timber wolves inhabit the surrounding forest. Ruffed grouse and wild turkeys are common.

Flora Ecosystems

The park features northern hardwood-conifer forest dominated by sugar maple, yellow birch, hemlock, and balsam fir. The lakeshore supports white cedar and black spruce. Wildflowers including trillium, bunchberry, and Canada mayflower bloom in spring. The forest is representative of the Upper Peninsula's boreal-hardwood transition.

Geology

The twin lakes are glacial features, occupying depressions carved by the Wisconsin glaciation. The surrounding landscape is composed of glacial deposits including moraines and outwash plains. The Iron Range geology includes Precambrian iron formations that fueled Michigan's iron mining industry.

Climate And Weather

The western Upper Peninsula has a harsh continental climate with long, snowy winters and short, pleasant summers. Snow depths can exceed several feet. Summer highs reach the mid-70s. The growing season is short at approximately 100-120 days.

Human History

The Ojibwe people inhabited the Upper Peninsula for centuries. Iron mining transformed the region in the late 19th century. The town of Iron River and surrounding communities developed around mining operations.

Park History

Twin Lakes State Park was established to provide recreational access to the lakes and surrounding forest in the western Upper Peninsula.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming and fishing are the primary attractions. Hiking trails explore the forest. The park is near the Iron County Heritage Trail system. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular in winter.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park is southwest of Iron River on Highway 73. Modern campsites, a swimming beach, and boat launch are available. Iron River provides basic services.

Conservation And Sustainability

Water quality in the lakes is monitored. The park's forest is managed for health and diversity. Invasive species are an ongoing concern in the lake and forest ecosystems.
