About Massasoit

Massasoit State Park encompasses 1,500 acres surrounding several kettle ponds in the Plymouth County towns of East Taunton and Lakeville, offering camping, swimming, and extensive trail recreation.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The diverse habitats support white-tailed deer, coyotes, and wild turkeys. The ponds attract various waterfowl and provide habitat for painted turtles. Vernal pools support amphibian breeding.

Flora Ecosystems

Mixed oak-pine forest typical of southeastern Massachusetts predominates. The kettle ponds support diverse aquatic vegetation. Atlantic white cedar swamps add botanical interest.

Geology

The park features classic Cape Cod-style kettle ponds formed by melting glacial ice blocks. The sandy outwash terrain supports the characteristic vegetation.

Climate And Weather

The southeastern location produces warm summers and mild winters with moderate snowfall.

Human History

The park is named for Massasoit, the Wampanoag sachem who befriended the Pilgrims. The Wampanoag people continue to inhabit southeastern Massachusetts.

Park History

The state developed the park to provide public recreation in the Taunton-Lakeville area. The campground has served generations of families.

Major Trails And Attractions

The swimming beach on Lake Rico provides summer recreation. Over 15 miles of trails serve hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The campground offers overnight stays.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The campground offers 126 sites. Beach facilities include restrooms and changing areas. The park is accessible from Route 24 via Middleboro Road.

Management maintains water quality and forest health. The park provides essential green space in a growing region.
