About Whitefish Lake

Whitefish Lake State Park encompasses 10 acres on the south shore of Whitefish Lake near the resort town of Whitefish in Flathead County. The park provides swimming, camping, and lake access in the heart of northwestern Montana's premier recreation area.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Whitefish Lake supports lake trout, bull trout, rainbow trout, and lake whitefish. Loons and ospreys frequent the lake. Bald eagles nest in the area. The surrounding forests support black bears, moose, and white-tailed deer.

Flora Ecosystems

Douglas fir, western larch, and ponderosa pine shade the park. The lakeshore supports willow and birch. The surrounding area features rich Pacific Northwest-influenced forests with diverse understory species.

Geology

Whitefish Lake is a glacially carved lake covering about 3,300 acres at approximately 3,000 feet elevation. The lake occupies a basin scooped out by glaciers that once extended from the nearby mountain ranges during the Pleistocene.

Climate And Weather

Northwestern Montana near Whitefish receives substantial precipitation, especially in winter when heavy snowfall supports the nearby Whitefish Mountain Resort ski area. Summers are mild and pleasant. Annual precipitation exceeds 20 inches.

Human History

The Whitefish area has been home to the Salish and Kootenai peoples. Whitefish developed as a railroad town and evolved into a year-round resort community centered around outdoor recreation.

Major Trails And Attractions

Swimming at the beach is the primary summer activity. Fishing and non-motorized boating provide water recreation. The park's proximity to Whitefish and Glacier National Park makes it a popular base for exploring the area.

The park offers 25 campsites, a swimming beach, a boat launch, and picnic facilities. It is located about 1 mile west of downtown Whitefish on State Park Road.
