About West Shore

West Shore State Park encompasses 138 acres on the west shore of Flathead Lake south of Lakeside in Flathead County. The park provides lakeside camping in a beautiful forested setting with mountain and lake views.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Flathead Lake supports lake trout, bull trout, and whitefish. Bald eagles, ospreys, and loons frequent the lake. Black bears occasionally visit the park. Mule deer and various songbirds inhabit the surrounding forests.

Flora Ecosystems

Dense forest of Douglas fir, western larch, and ponderosa pine surrounds the camping area. The forest understory includes huckleberry, kinnikinnick, and other native shrubs. The lakeshore supports willows and aquatic vegetation.

Geology

The park occupies the glacially formed western shore of Flathead Lake. The 191-square-mile lake fills a basin scoured by massive Pleistocene glaciers. The Salish Mountains rise behind the park to the west.

Climate And Weather

Flathead Lake creates a mild local climate. Annual precipitation averages about 18 inches on the west shore. Winters are cold but moderated by the lake. Summers are pleasant with cool evenings.

Human History

The west shore of Flathead Lake has been home to the Salish and Kootenai peoples for generations. The area developed as a recreation destination in the mid-20th century.

Park History

West Shore State Park provides camping and lake access on Flathead Lake's less-developed western shore, offering a quieter alternative to the busier east shore areas.

Major Trails And Attractions

Lake access for swimming and fishing is the primary draw. The forested campground provides a peaceful setting. Scenic views of the lake and Mission Mountains to the east are outstanding, especially at sunset.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park offers 26 campsites, a boat ramp, and a swimming area. It is located on Highway 93, about 5 miles south of Lakeside on the west shore of Flathead Lake.

Conservation And Sustainability

The park maintains shoreline habitat while providing lake access. Invasive species prevention protects Flathead Lake's ecosystem. The forested park setting preserves natural lakeshore character.
