Mashpee

Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 5,871 acres of pine barrens, wetlands, and coastal habitats on Cape Cod, protecting globally rare ecosystems and critical wildlife habitat.

The refuge protects habitat for rare species including New England cottontail rabbits, eastern box turtles, and numerous bird species. The diverse habitats support exceptional biodiversity.

The refuge protects globally rare pine barrens habitat with pitch pine and scrub oak. Atlantic white cedar swamps, freshwater wetlands, and coastal habitats add diversity.

The refuge occupies glacial outwash deposits typical of Cape Cod, with sandy soils supporting the characteristic vegetation.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has inhabited this region for thousands of years. The tribe maintains a sovereign presence adjacent to refuge lands.

Limited parking at trailheads. No developed facilities. The refuge is accessible via Route 28 and local roads in Mashpee.
