Von Bach Recreation Resort surrounds the Von Bach Dam on a tributary of the Swakop River in the Otjozondjupa Region of central Namibia, approximately 60 kilometers south of Windhoek near the town of Okahandja. The Von Bach game park supports populations of typical central Namibian species including kudu, oryx, eland, blue wildebeest, Hartmann's mountain zebra, and springbok. Giraffe and red hartebeest have been introduced. Smaller mammals include baboons, rock hyraxes, steenbok, and warthogs. The dam attracts a reasonable diversity of waterbirds including fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. The vegetation surrounding Von Bach Dam is typical of the central Namibian thornbush savanna, dominated by various Acacia species including sweet thorn and black thorn, along with shepherd's trees and wild seringa. The bushveld is relatively dense in places, transitioning to more open grassland on hillsides and along the dam margins. The dam shoreline supports reeds, sedges, and waterside grasses. After good rains, the savanna becomes green and lush with seasonal grasses and forbs. The vegetation reflects the transition between the Nama Karoo to the south and the broad-leaved savanna to the north, creating a diverse mix of plant species.

Von Bach Dam is constructed across a valley in the central Namibian highlands, where metamorphic rocks of the Damara Sequence form the underlying geology. Summer temperatures reach 32-35 degrees Celsius, while winter nights can drop to near freezing. The elevation moderates temperatures compared to lower-lying areas, making the climate relatively pleasant year-round. The dam level fluctuates with seasonal rainfall, and extended dry spells can significantly reduce water storage. The dry winter months from May through September offer the most comfortable visiting conditions with clear skies and moderate daytime temperatures.

The area around Okahandja has been historically significant as the traditional capital of the Herero people. Okahandja's location at the intersection of major travel routes made it an important meeting point between Herero, Nama, and European colonial interests. The German colonial period brought farming settlement and infrastructure development. Okahandja is the site of annual Herero commemorative gatherings honoring leaders and ancestors. The construction of Von Bach Dam in the late 1960s was part of the development of Windhoek's water supply infrastructure, recognizing the capital's growing demand in the semi-arid central highland environment.

Von Bach Resort is located approximately 60 kilometers south of Windhoek via the B1 highway, making it easily accessible as a day trip or overnight excursion. Turn off at Okahandja and follow signs to the resort. Camping sites and self-catering chalets are available, along with a restaurant, swimming pool, and communal braai areas. Boating and fishing permits can be obtained at the resort. The park is suitable for standard vehicles on the main roads. Fuel and supplies are available in Okahandja, just a few kilometers away. The park can be visited year-round, with the cooler months being most pleasant for outdoor activities.
