Gunung Merapi National Park encompasses Indonesias most active volcano and the surrounding landscape, where the creative and destructive forces of ongoing volcanic activity shape a dynamic ecosystem on the island of Java.

Gunung Merapi has been sacred to Javanese culture for centuries, with the Sultan of Yogyakarta considered spiritually responsible for managing the volcanos moods through ceremonies and offerings.

The park is easily accessible from Yogyakarta, a major city just 30 kilometers south of the summit, with good roads reaching several points around the mountains base.

Conservation at Gunung Merapi is fundamentally shaped by the volcanos ongoing activity, which periodically destroys and then allows regeneration of ecosystems in a cycle of renewal.
