Wall Doxey

Wall Doxey State Park is a scenic 805-acre recreation area in Marshall County, centered around a beautiful spring-fed lake in the hill country of north-central Mississippi. Named for U.S. Senator Wall Doxey, the park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, preserving excellent examples of Depression-era stonework and rustic architecture. The park offers fishing, swimming, camping, and nature trails in a peaceful setting approximately 45 miles south of Memphis, making it popular with both Mississippi residents and visitors from Tennessee.

Wall Doxey State Park supports diverse wildlife in its lake and forest habitats. The spring-fed lake harbors largemouth bass, bream, crappie, and channel catfish. Great blue herons, green herons, and belted kingfishers patrol the shoreline. Wood ducks nest in trees near the water. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and fox squirrels inhabit the surrounding oak-hickory forests. The mature forest supports numerous songbirds including wood thrushes, ovenbirds, and various warblers during migration.

The park features the mixed pine-hardwood forests characteristic of north-central Mississippi, with greater hardwood dominance than parks farther south. Oaks including white oak, red oak, and post oak mix with hickories, sweetgum, and loblolly pines. Flowering dogwoods provide spectacular spring blooms in the understory. American beech grows in moist ravines. Tulip poplars reach impressive sizes. The spring-fed lake is bordered by water-tolerant species. The forest has matured significantly since CCC-era establishment.

Wall Doxey State Park lies within the North Central Hills physiographic region, characterized by rolling terrain underlain by Coastal Plain sediments. The spring-fed lake occupies a natural basin enhanced by dam construction, with clear water maintained by groundwater contributions from underlying aquifers. Sandy and loamy soils support productive hardwood forests. The terrain here shows more relief than flatter regions to the west, with the varied topography creating diverse microclimates and hiking interest.

The park experiences a humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching the low 90s°F, while winters are cool with average highs in the 50s and more frequent freezing temperatures than southern Mississippi. Annual precipitation averages approximately 54 inches. The spring-fed lake maintains relatively stable water temperatures. Spring and fall offer ideal conditions for camping and outdoor activities.

North-central Mississippi was home to Chickasaw communities before forced removal opened the region to Euro-American settlement in the 1830s. The area developed with small farms and timber operations rather than large plantations. Holly Springs, the nearby county seat, became a prosperous antebellum town that survived the Civil War largely intact. U.S. Senator Wall Doxey represented Mississippi from 1941-1943 and supported the park that bears his name.

Wall Doxey State Park was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose skilled workers constructed the lake, stone and timber buildings, and trail system that remain the park's most distinctive features. The CCC craftsmanship is exceptionally well-preserved, with original structures still serving visitors. Wall Doxey State Park is located approximately 7 miles south of Holly Springs, Mississippi, accessible via Highway 7. The park offers 10 cabins with modern amenities and 64 camping sites with water and electrical hookups. Day-use facilities include a swimming beach with the historic CCC bathhouse, boat rentals, picnic pavilions, playground, and nature trails. Holly Springs offers services and historic attractions. Memphis, approximately 45 miles north, provides full urban amenities.
