Sweet Run State Park, Virginia's 42nd state park, encompasses 884 acres in northern Loudoun County, officially dedicated on October 6, 2023, by Governor Glenn Youngkin. Sweet Run State Park supports diverse wildlife populations within its varied habitats of mature forest, meadows, wetlands, and streams. The park hosts bald eagles and great blue herons along its waterways, while black bears inhabit the forested slopes. Of particular conservation significance, the park provides habitat for the wood turtle, a species of special concern in Virginia due to habitat loss throughout its range. The combination of aquatic habitats, wetlands, and upland forest creates ecosystem diversity that supports numerous bird species, amphibians, and mammals. Gordon Pond, accessible via a one-mile hike, hosts sunfish, largemouth bass, and crappie, along with the aquatic wildlife that depends on healthy pond ecosystems. Spring brings wildflower blooms and migrating birds, while autumn features spectacular foliage displays on the forested slopes. Annual precipitation averages approximately 40 inches, supporting lush vegetation and maintaining stream flows. The park's valley setting between two mountain ranges can create localized weather patterns, with fog occasionally settling in the lowlands.

The Between the Hills valley has been inhabited and utilized by humans for thousands of years. Native American peoples occupied this region long before European contact, utilizing the mountain passes and valleys for travel, hunting, and seasonal settlements. European settlers arrived in the 18th century, establishing farms and communities throughout Loudoun County. The park property retains evidence of its agricultural past, including elements of the historic backwoods settlement pattern. The valley's relative isolation between mountain ranges helped preserve its rural character even as surrounding Loudoun County experienced rapid suburban development. The creation of Sweet Run State Park resulted from decades of conservation efforts and land acquisitions. In 1999, the Robert and Dee Leggett Foundation purchased land in this area and established the Blue Ridge Center for Ecological Stewardship, focusing on sustainability, natural resource management, and public access to nature. The foundation donated 604 acres to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in 2016, forming the core of the future state park. Loudoun County purchased an additional 280 acres in 2018 and transferred this land in 2022, expanding the protected area. After years of planning and trail development, Governor Glenn Youngkin officially dedicated Sweet Run State Park on October 6, 2023, making it Virginia's 42nd state park and the first in Loudoun County.

Sweet Run State Park features 11 miles of hiking trails and 9 miles of equestrian trails that wind along streams, through mature forest, meadows, and mountain-side terrain. The trail system includes access to the Appalachian Trail, connecting the park to this famous 2,190-mile footpath. Creek crossings without bridges on Butterfly Alley, Bypass, Lower Sweet Run, and Piney Run trails add adventure for hikers. The Farmstead Loop Trail leads to a trail shelter approximately quarter-mile from the main entrance parking. Gordon Pond, accessible via an approximately one-mile hike from the Arnold Lane parking area, offers hike-in fishing opportunities. The park's expansive views of the Blue Ridge Mountains provide scenic rewards throughout the trail system. The picnic pavilion and nature play area serve day visitors.

Sweet Run State Park is located in northern Loudoun County, Virginia, near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, accessible from Route 9 and local roads. The park operates from 8 a.m. to dusk daily. Current facilities include parking areas, a picnic pavilion, nature play area, and an extensive trail system. One trail shelter on the Farmstead Loop Trail provides a rustic destination approximately quarter-mile from the main entrance.
