About Steens Mountain
A 428,000-acre BLM cooperative management area protecting the massive fault-block ridge of Steens Mountain, which rises to 9,733 feet above the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon. Created by the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000, it conserves glacially carved gorges, aspen groves, wild horses, and the nation's first congressionally designated cow-free wilderness.
