Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park at 11,861 acres, located approximately 20 miles south of Birmingham in Pelham. Growing from 940 acres established in 1927 atop Double Oak Mountain, the park now offers over 100 miles of trails, two lakes, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and diverse recreational facilities. Runner's World Magazine has recognized the trails among America's Top 25 Best Trail Runs, while the mountain biking Red Trail earned inclusion on the International Mountain Bicycling Association's Epic list.

The Alabama Wildlife Center within the park rehabilitates over 2,500 injured and orphaned wild animals annually, with non-releasable birds of prey viewable from the Treetop Nature Trail boardwalk. Pileated woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds, and during migrations, warblers, vireos, and tanagers inhabit the extensive forests. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various small mammals are commonly observed. Double Oak Lake and other water features support fish and aquatic wildlife.

The 11,861 acres support varied forest communities on different aspects and elevations of the park's hilly terrain. Hardwood forests dominate many areas, with oaks and hickories providing fall color and wildlife food. Pine stands occupy drier ridgetops. Rhododendrons and other understory shrubs bloom along streams. The Oak Mountain Interpretive Center displays native plant information alongside live animal exhibits.

Double Oak Mountain, the park's namesake, rises to 1,260 feet at Shackleford Point, the highest point in the park. The terrain of ridges and valleys was formed from ancient sedimentary rocks over millions of years. Peavine Falls drops 65 feet over exposed rock faces, demonstrating the erosive power that shaped this landscape. Rock formations along trails reveal the geological structure underlying the forest.

The Birmingham metropolitan area's climate brings hot, humid summers and mild winters, though the park's elevation creates somewhat cooler conditions than the surrounding lowlands. The extensive forest canopy provides shade during summer months. Fall brings spectacular foliage color across the hardwood-dominated forests. Spring wildflowers and mild temperatures create ideal hiking conditions.

Native American peoples inhabited this region for thousands of years before European contact. Early settlers utilized the land for farming and timber extraction. The establishment of Birmingham nearby brought increasing recreational pressure that led to conservation efforts. The park's development provided jobs during the Great Depression while preserving a significant natural area accessible to the growing city.

The Alabama State Lands Act of 1927 established the original 940-acre park atop Double Oak Mountain. Decades of expansion grew the park to its current 11,861 acres. Trail development accelerated in recent decades, with the 22-mile Red Trail earning IMBA Epic designation in 2010. The Alabama Wildlife Center was established to rehabilitate injured wildlife while providing educational opportunities. Modern amenities complement the natural resources.

Over 100 miles of trails serve hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, with 27 miles exclusive to horses and 32 miles for hikers only. Peavine Falls offers a scenic 65-foot cascade. Maggie's Glen provides a popular streamside hiking destination. The Treetop Nature Trail boardwalk passes the Wildlife Center's non-releasable raptors. Double Oak Lake supports fishing. The Oak Mountain Interpretive Center features natural history exhibits.

The park offers camping, cabins, and numerous day-use facilities. Two lakes provide fishing and non-motorized boating. The beach complex supports swimming. Golf course, BMX track, and horse stables expand recreational options. The Interpretive Center provides educational programming. Located in Pelham off Interstate 65, the park serves the greater Birmingham metropolitan area.

The Alabama Wildlife Center's rehabilitation program directly contributes to wildlife conservation, returning thousands of animals to the wild annually.
