Lakepoint

Lakepoint State Park encompasses 1,220 acres on the western shore of Lake Eufaula, a 45,000-acre impoundment of the Chattahoochee River in southeastern Alabama. The park adjoins Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge and serves as a stop on Alabama's Wiregrass Birding Trail, making it a premier destination for wildlife observation. American alligators, numerous raptor species including osprey, and diverse songbirds draw nature enthusiasts alongside the excellent fishing that Lake Eufaula is known for.

The park's location adjacent to Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge creates exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. American alligators are regularly sighted in the park's waters. Ospreys often nest in or near the parking areas, while loggerhead shrikes and eastern meadowlarks frequent open areas. Winter brings waterfowl rafts and occasionally white-fronted or Ross' geese. Pine warblers and brown-headed nuthatches inhabit the woodland areas year-round.

The park features diverse habitats from pine woods to lakeside vegetation that support varied birdlife. Pine forests contain the typical understory of the Wiregrass region. Wetland vegetation along the shoreline provides food and cover for waterfowl and wading birds. The 5 miles of hiking trails pass through representative plant communities of southeastern Alabama.

Lake Eufaula, also known as Walter F. George Lake, was created by damming the Chattahoochee River, which forms the Alabama-Georgia border. The 45,000-acre reservoir occupies the former river floodplain, with the park situated on the gently rolling terrain of the western shore. Soils developed from Coastal Plain sediments support the pine and mixed hardwood forests.

Southeastern Alabama's subtropical climate provides mild winters that attract wintering waterfowl and long warm seasons supporting diverse wildlife. The lake moderates nearby temperatures somewhat. The extended growing season allows for productive fishing throughout much of the year. Spring and fall migrations bring waves of songbirds and shorebirds through the region.

The Chattahoochee River valley was home to Creek and other Native American peoples for thousands of years. The city of Eufaula developed as a cotton-trading center in the antebellum era. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers created Lake Eufaula in the 1960s by constructing Walter F. George Lock and Dam, transforming the region and creating the recreational opportunities the park now provides.

Lakepoint State Park was established to provide public access to Lake Eufaula and preserve habitat adjacent to the federal wildlife refuge. The resort facilities including lodge and golf course developed to serve visitors drawn by the lake's renowned fishing. The park's designation as a Wiregrass Birding Trail stop recognizes its importance for bird conservation and nature-based tourism.

Five miles of hiking trails provide access to diverse habitats for wildlife viewing and birding. The marina facilities support fishing and boating on 45,000-acre Lake Eufaula, one of the Southeast's premier bass fisheries. The annual Fins, Feathers and Flowers weekend features guided tours, expert lectures, and stargazing amid the park's scenic beauty. The beach area offers swimming access to the lake.

Resort facilities include the lodge and marina overlooking Lake Eufaula. The campground provides sites for RV and tent camping. The marina offers boat rentals, fuel, and supplies for fishing excursions. Located on the north side of Eufaula off U.S. Highway 431, the park serves visitors from throughout southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia. The adjacent Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge adds extensive additional area for wildlife observation.
