Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão

Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão National Park is a small national park in Ainaro Municipality, in the central highlands of Timor-Leste. A government resolution of October 2015 created it within the Monte Cablaque protected zone, in the Hatu Udo administrative post, to preserve a site symbolic of the resistance. The World Database on Protected Areas lists it at 92.31 km²^[1].

Timor's highland forests support many bird species found nowhere else, including restricted-range species of the Timor and Wetar Endemic Bird Area^[2].

The park lies in the montane belt of central Timor, where forest cover has been reduced by clearance and grazing in many highland areas^[3].

The central Timor highlands were raised by the collision of the Australian and Eurasian plates^[3].

Timor has a tropical monsoon climate with a wet season and a dry season. Ainaro's highlands are cooler than the coast.

The park commemorates a site tied to the resistance to Indonesian occupation, and is named after resistance leader and later prime minister Xanana Gusmão.

The Council of Ministers meeting of 20 October 2015 included the resolution creating the park, and the protected-area record gives its status year as 2015.

The main interest of the park is its historical significance as a resistance site in Ainaro's mountains. The nearby Mount Ramelau, Timor-Leste's highest peak at 2,963 m, is a major trekking destination in the same municipality^[3].
