About Góra Sieradowska im. Wiktora Kozłowskiego
Góra Sieradowska im. Wiktora Kozłowskiego is a forest nature reserve in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, in Bodzentyn commune, Kielce County. Created in 1995, it protects natural communities with characteristic mountain vegetation and primeval-type forest on the northern slope of Góra Sieradowska, which rises to 382 m[1]. It is named after Wiktor Kozłowski, a forester, and lies in the Sieradowice Landscape Park.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The sources for the reserve describe its plants and forest rather than its animals, so no species are listed here. As an old, largely unbroken fir and beech forest on a hill slope cut by streams, it provides the kind of habitat typical of the Świętokrzyskie uplands for woodland wildlife.
Flora Ecosystems
Fir and beech dominate the multi-species mixed forest, with oak, larch, sycamore, maple, ash, hornbeam, spruce, pine, birch and alder also present[1]. Protected and rare plants include mezereon, European globeflower, wood anemone, broad-leaved helleborine, hard shield fern, rock and green spleenworts, and several clubmosses[2].
Geology
The reserve covers the northern slope of a dome-shaped hill in the Sieradowice Range of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Deep valleys cut by the Świślina stream and its tributaries cross it, and erosion gorges with height differences of several dozen metres are present[2].
Climate And Weather
The Świętokrzyskie uplands have a temperate climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The shaded north-facing slope and the stream valleys keep the forest floor cool and damp, which suits the ferns and mosses recorded here.
Human History
The reserve lies at the southern edge of the Siekierzyńskie forests, east of the village of Siekierno[1]. It carries the name of Wiktor Kozłowski, a forester, in recognition of the forestry tradition of the area.
Park History
The reserve was created in 1995 by an order of the Minister of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry (Monitor Polski 1995 no. 33, item 394). It is a partial reserve covering about 197 hectares of the northern slope, with the summit left outside[1].
Major Trails And Attractions
A blue tourist trail from Wąchock to Cedzyna passes through the reserve[1]. The main attractions are the old fir and beech forest, the deep gorges, and the spring display of woodland flowers. The PTTK Świętokrzyskie listing for the reserve notes that dogs are not permitted.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The reserve is east of Siekierno in Bodzentyn commune and is visited on foot along the blue trail[1]. No visitor centre or other facilities are described for it, and dogs are banned.
Conservation And Sustainability
Protection aims to keep the mountain vegetation and near-natural fir and beech forest intact. The reserve lies within the Sieradowice Landscape Park, and it shelters many legally protected plants, such as mezereon, European globeflower and several clubmosses[1].
