A large coral atoll of 91 islets enclosing an extensive lagoon, designated as the first Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in the Marshall Islands. Managed via the national Environmental Protection Authority and local government, it protects diverse and relatively pristine marine and terrestrial habitats including mangroves and seabird and turtle breeding sites.
