Los Nevados

Los Nevados National Natural Park protects the highest reaches of Colombia's Central Cordillera, encompassing a chain of glacier-capped volcanoes, vast páramo ecosystems, and Andean cloud forests across four departments. Covering approximately 61,388 hectares at elevations from 2,600 to 5,321 meters at the summit of Nevado del Ruiz, the park contains the most accessible high-altitude volcanic landscape in the Colombian Andes.^[1]

Despite extreme conditions at high elevation, the park supports spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, and Andean condors. White-tailed deer and Andean foxes are commonly seen in the páramo. The high-altitude páramo shelters the buffy helmetcrest, a hummingbird endemic to the Nevado del Ruiz area and found primarily within the park's páramo zone.^[2] The páramo vegetation supports high-altitude butterflies and bees that pollinate frailejón flowers. Glacial lakes host unique cold-water invertebrate communities.

The vast páramo ecosystem is dominated by extensive frailejón fields where multiple Espeletia species create iconic golden-green landscapes. Below the páramo, subpáramo scrublands of dwarf bamboo and ericaceous shrubs form a dense transition zone. Cloud forests at lower elevations feature Andean oaks and dense epiphyte communities. The wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), Colombia's national tree and the world's tallest monocot, grows in the Quindío sector.^[3]

The park encompasses the most prominent volcanic complex in Colombia's Central Cordillera, including the active volcanoes Nevado del Ruiz (5,321 m), Nevado del Tolima (5,276 m), and Nevado de Santa Isabel (4,950 m).^[4][5] Nevado del Ruiz's catastrophic 1985 eruption generated lahars that destroyed Armero and killed over 23,000 people.^[6] The remnant glaciers, though rapidly shrinking, still cap the highest peaks. Hot springs and fumaroles indicate ongoing volcanic activity.

The high-altitude environment creates extreme conditions, with temperatures in the páramo averaging 3 to 8 degrees Celsius and dropping well below freezing at volcanic summits. Annual precipitation varies from 1,500 millimeters on drier eastern slopes to over 3,000 on western exposures. January and July offer the best conditions for mountaineering. Rapid weather changes are common, with clear mornings frequently giving way to afternoon fog, rain, or snow.

The volcanic highlands have been revered by indigenous Quimbaya and Pijao peoples for centuries. The 1985 eruption of Nevado del Ruiz and the Armero tragedy profoundly shaped Colombia's relationship with its volcanic landscape, leading to major advances in volcanic monitoring.^[6] The Coffee Cultural Landscape surrounding the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site reflecting centuries of coffee cultivation on fertile volcanic soils.

Los Nevados was established on April 30, 1974, to protect the glacial and volcanic ecosystems along with their critical watershed functions.^[1] The 1985 eruption led to integration of volcanic monitoring into park management. The park has become one of Colombia's most visited protected areas, with the relative accessibility of the Nevado del Ruiz sector drawing thousands of visitors annually.

The road to the Nevado del Ruiz volcanic shelter at approximately 4,800 meters is the most popular access point. The multi-day trek to Nevado del Tolima is considered one of Colombia's premier mountaineering challenges. The Valle de los Frailejones showcases endless fields of these iconic páramo plants. Thermal pools at sites like Termales del Ruiz provide relaxation. Laguna del Otún is a popular trekking destination at 3,900 meters.

The primary access is from Manizales, with the Nevado del Ruiz sector reachable by paved road climbing to approximately 4,800 meters. Park entrance stations at Las Brisas and La Florida provide orientation and collect fees. The mountain shelter offers basic overnight accommodation. The eastern access from Pereira provides a trekking route to Laguna del Otún. Visitors must be prepared for cold conditions and potential altitude effects.

The most visible concern is the rapid retreat of glaciers, which have lost more than half their surface area in recent decades.^[7] Glacier loss disrupts downstream water supply for millions of people. Páramo degradation from cattle grazing, farming encroachment, and fire remains an ongoing challenge. The high volume of visitors creates trail erosion and waste management issues. Volcanic hazard management remains critical given continued activity of Nevado del Ruiz.
