Devetashka Cave

Devetashka Cave is one of the largest and most impressive karst caves in Bulgaria, located near the village of Devetaki in Lovech Province, approximately 18 kilometers northeast of the city of Lovech. The cave stretches for nearly 2,442 meters and features a spectacular main gallery up to 60 meters wide and 30 meters high. Seven large openings in the cave ceiling allow natural light to flood the interior, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The cave is protected as a Natural Monument and gained international recognition after serving as a filming location for the 2012 action film 'The Expendables 2.' It is one of the most visited natural attractions in Bulgaria, drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually.

Devetashka Cave hosts one of the most significant bat colonies in Bulgaria and across Europe. The cave shelters at least 35,000 bats representing numerous species, including the Greater Horseshoe Bat, Lesser Horseshoe Bat, Long-fingered Bat, and Schreibers's Bat. The cave ecosystem depends on this enormous bat population, whose guano supports a complex food web of insects, cave spiders, and microorganisms. The Osam River flows through the lower portions of the cave, supporting aquatic invertebrates and providing a unique underground riparian habitat. Above the cave entrance, the surrounding limestone cliffs and forest support birds of prey including Eagle Owls and various raptors.

The vegetation surrounding Devetashka Cave reflects the typical flora of the sub-Balkan zone of central Bulgaria. Deciduous forests dominated by oak, hornbeam, and lime trees cover the plateau above the cave. The cave entrance areas support moisture-loving ferns, mosses, and liverworts that thrive in the perpetually humid microclimate. Riparian vegetation along the Osam River gorge includes willows, alders, and black poplars. The limestone outcrops host specialized calcicole plants adapted to thin alkaline soils. Locally rare orchid species have been recorded in the meadows adjacent to the cave system, adding botanical significance to the site.

Devetashka Cave formed within Jurassic-age limestone of the Fore-Balkan geological zone. The cave system developed over millions of years through the dissolution of calcium carbonate by slightly acidic groundwater, a process known as karstification. The Osam River, which carved the surrounding gorge, also played a crucial role in shaping the cave's lower galleries. The massive ceiling openings, called 'oculi,' resulted from the collapse of weakened roof sections over geological time. Stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone deposits adorn interior chambers, recording thousands of years of mineral-rich water seepage. The cave's geological formations span multiple phases of speleogenesis spanning from the Cretaceous period onward.

The interior of Devetashka Cave maintains a near-constant temperature of approximately 8–10°C year-round, regardless of external seasonal variations. Humidity inside the cave is consistently high, typically exceeding 90%, creating a stable microclimate that supports the large bat colonies. The surrounding Lovech Province region experiences a temperate continental climate with warm summers averaging 22–24°C and cold winters with temperatures often falling below freezing. Annual precipitation averages around 600 millimeters, with spring and early summer being the wettest periods. The natural skylights in the cave ceiling create dramatic light displays in the interior during clear days, particularly around midday.

Archaeological excavations at Devetashka Cave have revealed evidence of continuous human habitation spanning from the Paleolithic era through the Bronze Age and into historical times. Artifacts including stone tools, ceramic fragments, animal bones, and hearth remnants indicate that prehistoric peoples used the cave as a shelter for thousands of years. The cave's enormous interior with its natural lighting made it an ideal refuge. Neolithic settlements dating to approximately 6000–5000 BCE have been particularly well documented. The nearby Devetaki village, which gives the cave its name, has roots stretching back to medieval Bulgarian settlement. The cave appears in local folklore as a place of mystery and legend.

Devetashka Cave was designated as a Natural Monument under Bulgarian nature protection legislation to safeguard its exceptional geological, biological, and archaeological values. Protection measures were strengthened after the massive bat colony was documented in detail by Bulgarian speleologists and biologists in the late 20th century. The cave became widely known internationally after the 2012 Hollywood film 'The Expendables 2' used it as a primary filming location, resulting in temporary controversy when the production disturbed the bat colony. Subsequent regulations tightened access protocols to protect the sensitive ecosystem. The cave is administered jointly by local authorities and national environmental agencies, with guided tours operating on a controlled basis.

Visitors access Devetashka Cave via a well-maintained path from the car park near the Osam River. The guided tour route takes approximately one hour and covers the main gallery and several smaller chambers, passing beneath the dramatic ceiling openings that flood the interior with shafts of light. The cave's cathedral-like proportions and the sight of thousands of bats roosting overhead are the primary attractions. The nearby Osam River gorge offers scenic walking opportunities along its banks. The town of Lovech, just 18 kilometers away, features the historic Covered Bridge and the Varosha historical quarter, making Devetashka Cave a natural complement to a regional touring itinerary.

Devetashka Cave is located near the village of Devetaki, accessible by paved road from Lovech. A small visitor area near the cave entrance includes a car park and ticket office. Guided tours are mandatory and operate daily during the main tourist season, with reduced hours in winter. The path to the cave entrance is relatively easy, suitable for most visitors, though the interior involves some uneven rocky terrain. There are no accommodation facilities at the cave itself, but Lovech city offers hotels, restaurants, and full tourist services. The nearest public transport connections are available from Lovech, from which taxis or rental vehicles can reach the cave.

Conservation of Devetashka Cave focuses primarily on protecting its vast bat colony, one of the largest in Europe. Visitor numbers are carefully managed through guided-tour-only access to minimize disturbance to roosting bats. Entry is restricted or prohibited during the bats' breeding and hibernation seasons. The cave is listed under Natura 2000, the European Union's nature protection network, providing additional legal safeguards. Bulgarian wildlife protection laws prohibit disturbance to the bat species present. Conservation organizations monitor bat populations annually and assess the health of the cave ecosystem. The controversy over the 2012 film production led to tighter environmental impact assessment requirements for any future activities within the cave.
