About Selirong
Selirong, also called Pulau Selirong, is a flat island in Brunei Bay in Temburong District, at the delta of the Temburong River. It is a mangrove forest recreation park of about 2,566 hectares[1].
Wildlife Ecosystems
Proboscis monkeys, macaques, kingfishers and eagles live in the forest[1].
Flora Ecosystems
About 2,409 hectares of the island are mangrove forest, with nipah palms, stilt roots and bakau trees (Rhizophora apiculata)[1].
Geology
The island lies at the delta of the Temburong River and rises no more than about 1 m above sea level[1].
Climate And Weather
Brunei has a hot, humid equatorial climate with rain through the year, and the island is tidal mangrove at sea level.
Human History
The island is uninhabited. In 1948 the 2,499-hectare Labu-Selirong Wildlife Sanctuary was established, and in 1954 it was expanded to 8,984 hectares[1].
Park History
From 1995 the Forestry Department worked to turn the island into a recreational park, and it was developed in 1998 under the 6th National Development Plan[1].

A 2 km walkway and an observation tower let visitors see the mangroves and watch wildlife[1].
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The island is reached only by speedboat, about 45 minutes from Muara via the Brunei River and across Brunei Bay[1].

It is protected as a wildlife sanctuary and recreational forest park, and used for ecotourism, research and education[1].
