About Woodman Point
Woodman Point Regional Park is a 312-hectare coastal reserve on the Cockburn Sound coast south of Fremantle, protecting coastal heath, banksia woodland, and limestone coastal habitats on the Woodman Point headland. The park is adjacent to the historic Woodman Point Quarantine Station (established 1840s) — one of Australia's most historically significant quarantine facilities. The park provides accessible coastal nature for Perth's southern suburbs. It is managed by DBCA.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The park supports coastal fauna typical of Swan Coastal Plain limestone and banksia habitats. Western grey kangaroos, quendas, and brush wallabies inhabit the woodland. Carnaby's black-cockatoos forage in banksia heath. The coastal limestone reef and marine habitat of Cockburn Sound is adjacent — the sound supports sea lions, bottlenose dolphins, and diverse fish. Osprey nests have been recorded in tall coastal trees. Shorebirds use the rocky coastal margins seasonally.
Flora Ecosystems
Coastal banksia woodland (Banksia attenuata, B. menziesii) on Tamala Limestone and Spearwood sands dominates. Coastal heath with Acacia and Hakea species occupies the headland. Beach spinifex and coastal daisies occur on dune margins. The limestone coastal heath supports several Declared Rare Flora species.
Geology
Woodman Point is underlain by Tamala Limestone — Pleistocene calcareous coastal dune limestone. The point protrudes into Cockburn Sound, sheltered by Garden Island and the Rockingham shoreline. Rocky limestone reefs extend from the foreshore.
Climate And Weather
Mediterranean climate. Annual rainfall approximately 700 mm. The coastal location moderates temperatures. Summer sea breezes (Fremantle Doctor) are consistent. Cockburn Sound is sheltered from ocean swell.
Human History
Woodman Point is part of Whadjuk Noongar boodja. The headland was used as a quarantine station from the 1840s — ships arriving in Fremantle were required to hold passengers here before entry if disease was suspected. The quarantine station is now heritage-listed.
Park History
Woodman Point Regional Park was established to protect the coastal ecological and heritage values of the headland. The park is managed in conjunction with the adjacent heritage precinct and provides public open space for the southern Perth metropolitan area.
Major Trails And Attractions
Walking trails along the limestone coastal foreshore. Spring wildflower observation. Birdwatching for black-cockatoos and shorebirds. Views of Cockburn Sound and Garden Island.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
Located in the City of Cockburn, south of Fremantle. Access via Woodman Point Road from the Rockingham Road. Car park, picnic areas, and walking trails. Free entry. Accessible from southern Perth suburbs.
Conservation And Sustainability
Invasive weeds including cape tulip, arum lily, and coastal annual grasses threaten native vegetation. Phytophthora cinnamomi dieback affects proteaceous coastal heath. Fox and cat predation reduces ground-nesting bird and small mammal populations.
