About Wooditjup

Wooditjup National Park is a 3,650-hectare protected area near the town of Busselton in the Geographe Bay region of southwestern Western Australia. The park protects tuart woodland — one of the world's most restricted vegetation communities — along with jarrah-marri forest and coastal habitats. Wooditjup is the Noongar name for this country. The park is a critical conservation reserve for the threatened western ringtail possum and Carnaby's black-cockatoo in the Busselton region. It is managed by DBCA.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Wooditjup National Park is one of the most important habitats for the critically endangered western ringtail possum outside the Margaret River-Augusta area. The possums depend on tuart and peppermint trees as primary winter food sources. Carnaby's black-cockatoos nest in old-growth tuart hollows and forage on marri and banksia seeds. Short-beaked echidnas, brush wallabies, western grey kangaroos, and quendas are resident. Tiger snakes and bobtail lizards inhabit the woodland understorey.

Flora Ecosystems

Tuart (E. gomphocephala) woodland — restricted globally to a narrow coastal strip between Jurien Bay and Busselton on calcareous coastal soils — is the dominant vegetation type. Old-growth tuart trees up to 400 years old, with large cavities formed by fire over centuries, are critical possum and black-cockatoo habitat. Marri and jarrah occur on deeper sandy soils. The understorey includes sheoak, peppermint (Agonis flexuosa), wattles, and spring-flowering herbs. The park is within the Southwest Australian Floristic Region.

Geology

The park sits on Tamala Limestone — Pleistocene calcareous coastal dunes that provide the alkaline, well-drained substrate required by tuart. The limestone is immediately adjacent to Geographe Bay, reflecting the marine carbonate origin of the parent material. The flat coastal plain with limestone substrate is the defining geological feature enabling tuart woodland.

Climate And Weather

Warm Mediterranean climate. Annual rainfall 700–800 mm. The maritime influence of Geographe Bay moderates temperatures. Summers are hot and dry (25–37°C); winters are mild and wet. Summer drought is the norm — tuart trees access deep soil moisture through extensive root systems.

Human History

Wooditjup National Park lies within Pibulmun Noongar country. Noongar people have used the Geographe Bay coast and hinterland for thousands of years. The tuart woodland was an important resource area. European settlement of the Busselton area commenced in the 1830s — Busselton became WA's first permanent country settlement. The Busselton Jetty (the world's longest wooden jetty at 1.84 km) reflects this early settlement history.

Park History

Wooditjup National Park was proclaimed to protect the outstanding tuart woodland and provide habitat for the western ringtail possum. The park is a key component of the Geographe Bay conservation reserve network. DBCA manages an active fox control program to support possum recovery.

Major Trails And Attractions

Tuart Forest Walk through old-growth tuart trees. Wildlife spotting — western ringtail possums (best at night in peppermint trees), black-cockatoos, and echidnas. Spring wildflower observation. Interpretive panels on tuart woodland ecology. The park is close to the Busselton tourist precinct.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

Located near the Vasse-Yallingup area west of Busselton. Access from Bussell Highway. Car park and walking trails. Free entry. Busselton and Dunsborough provide full visitor services.

Conservation And Sustainability

Western ringtail possum conservation is the primary management priority. Fox control through baiting is conducted throughout the park and buffer zones. Tuart dieback from Phytophthora cinnamomi and other causes is reducing old-growth habitat. Climate change and reduced winter rainfall are affecting tuart tree health. Invasive weeds including cape tulip, sea lavender, and bluebell creeper require management.
