About Little Green Island

Little Green Island Nature Reserve is a granite island in Bass Strait, part of the Great Dog Island Group in the Furneaux Group. Like its larger neighbour Big Green Island, this small island provides important habitat for seabirds in the central-eastern Bass Strait region. The island group name reflects the green vegetation cover provided by the tussock grassland and heath that distinguishes these islands from more barren rocky outcrops in the area.

Wildlife Ecosystems

Little Green Island supports breeding seabirds including short-tailed shearwaters in burrow colonies. The surrounding marine environment provides foraging habitat. The island's small size limits the total colony population but contributes to the collective seabird breeding complex of the Great Dog Island Group.

Flora Ecosystems

Coastal tussock grassland and heath adapted to wind and salt spray form the vegetation of Little Green Island. The green appearance that gives the island group its name comes from the relatively dense tussock grass vegetation. Shearwater burrow activity creates the distinctive mounded terrain characteristic of Bass Strait seabird islands.

Geology

The island is composed of Devonian granite typical of the Furneaux Group. The rocky coastal margins provide limited haul-out habitat for fur seals.

Climate And Weather

Central Bass Strait maritime climate with persistent westerly winds and the variable sea conditions typical of the strait.

Human History

The Great Dog Island Group was known to Palawa people and visited by sealers and bird hunters in the colonial era.

Park History

Little Green Island was declared a nature reserve as part of the Great Dog Island Group protection framework.

Major Trails And Attractions

No visitor infrastructure. Wildlife observed from vessels.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

No public access. Accessible by vessel from Flinders Island with Parks and Wildlife Tasmania permits.

Conservation And Sustainability

Conservation focuses on biosecurity to protect the seabird colony from invasive predators. Monitoring of breeding success provides data on Bass Strait marine productivity.
