About Wild Horse Island

Wild Horse Island State Park encompasses 2,163 acres on the largest island in Flathead Lake in Lake County. Accessible only by boat, the island harbors wild horses, bighorn sheep, and diverse wildlife in a unique island ecosystem on the largest natural freshwater lake in the western U.S.

Wildlife Ecosystems

The island supports a small herd of wild horses, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and coyotes. Bald eagles nest on the island, and ospreys fish the surrounding waters. Songbirds are diverse in the varied habitats. Occasional bears swim to the island.

Flora Ecosystems

Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forests cover portions of the island, while native bunchgrass prairies dominate the open areas. Palouse prairie remnants on the island are among the best preserved in the region. Wildflowers bloom prolifically in spring.

Geology

Wild Horse Island is a large island in Flathead Lake formed during glacial retreat. The island's geology includes Belt Supergroup sedimentary rocks. The island rises over 200 feet above lake level, with varied terrain from shoreline to forested hills.

Climate And Weather

The island benefits from Flathead Lake's climate-moderating effect. Winters are milder than mainland locations, and summers are pleasant. The island receives about 15 inches of annual precipitation.

Human History

The Salish-Kootenai peoples reportedly used the island to protect their horses from theft by other tribes, giving the island its name. Wild horses have been present for generations, adding to the island's mystique.

Park History

Wild Horse Island became a state park in 1978 after efforts to prevent residential development. The island represents one of Montana's most unique park properties, accessible only by private boat.

Major Trails And Attractions

Hiking trails explore the island's forests, prairies, and shoreline. Viewing wild horses and bighorn sheep is a highlight. Swimming and beaching along the shoreline provide lakeside recreation. The island offers a genuine wilderness experience.

Visitor Facilities And Travel

The park has no developed facilities or campgrounds. It is accessed only by private boat from several launch points around Flathead Lake. Day use only; no overnight camping is permitted.

Conservation And Sustainability

The wild horse herd is managed to prevent overgrazing. Bighorn sheep populations are monitored. The island's intact Palouse prairie remnants are ecologically significant and protected from development.
