About Pictograph Cave
Pictograph Cave State Park encompasses 23 acres southeast of Billings in Yellowstone County, protecting three caves containing ancient rock art dating back over 2,000 years. The park is a National Historic Landmark and provides one of Montana's most significant archaeological sites.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The sandstone rimrock habitat supports mule deer, cottontail rabbits, and various raptors. Prairie falcons and great horned owls nest in the cliff faces. Rattlesnakes inhabit the rocky terrain.
Flora Ecosystems
Ponderosa pine and juniper grow on the rimrock terrain. Sagebrush and native grasses cover the surrounding slopes. The sandstone cliff ecosystem supports specialized plants adapted to rocky, dry conditions.
Geology
The caves formed through erosion of the Eagle Sandstone, a Cretaceous-age formation. Pictograph Cave is the largest, with Ghost Cave and Middle Cave nearby. Archaeological excavations revealed occupation layers spanning at least 4,500 years.
Climate And Weather
The Billings area experiences a semi-arid climate with warm summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation averages about 14 inches. The south-facing caves receive substantial solar warmth.
Human History
Over 100 pictographs in Pictograph Cave depict animals, humans, and geometric designs spanning at least 2,000 years. Archaeological excavations beginning in 1937 recovered over 30,000 artifacts, documenting millennia of habitation.
Park History
Pictograph Cave was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and became a state park to protect the irreplaceable rock art and archaeological resources. Conservation of the pictographs is an ongoing effort.
Major Trails And Attractions
A paved interpretive trail leads to viewing platforms at each of the three caves. The pictographs in the main cave are visible from the trail. Interpretive signs explain the art and archaeology. The visitor center provides context.
Visitor Facilities And Travel
The park offers a visitor center, interpretive trails, and picnic facilities. It is located about 6 miles southeast of Billings off Coburn Road, accessible from Interstate 90.
