About Myles Standish
Myles Standish State Forest is the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts, encompassing 14,635 acres of pine barrens and kettle ponds in Plymouth and Carver.
Wildlife Ecosystems
The globally rare pine barrens support unique wildlife including whip-poor-wills and eastern box turtles. The numerous kettle ponds provide habitat for rare pond species. Plymouth red-bellied turtles occur in several ponds.
Flora Ecosystems
The forest protects one of the largest remaining pitch pine-scrub oak barrens ecosystems in the world. The unique plant community developed on nutrient-poor sandy soils.
Geology
The forest occupies glacial outwash deposits with over 16 kettle ponds formed by melting ice blocks. The porous sandy soils support the specialized barrens vegetation.
